News Synopsis

Twitter has announced a merger with X, Elon Musk's "everything app". In a court filing, Twitter stated that it's no longer in existence and that its assets had been merged with those of X Corp., a privately owned company with its corporate headquarters in San Francisco, California, and a Nevada incorporation.

Musk, who continues to run the social media site Twitter on a daily basis, has long been interested in creating an application with all the features of WeChat in China. He has said that Twitter is a driving force behind the creation of X, a sort of "super app."

Elon Musk has said he wants to create a "super app" for the United States. On a podcast last year, he stated that either Twitter would need to be changed into such an app or something new would have to be developed. WeChat, a Chinese app that offers social networking, messaging, and a payment system, was mentioned by Musk as a useful tool that the United States now lacks.

A important factor that could influence Musk to adopt his long-term business plan is the merger of Twitter and X Corp. Since 1999, when he co-founded X.com, an online bank that later combined to form PayPal, Musk has had the ambition to create a super app. A super app platform featuring capabilities like social networking, messaging, and a payment mechanism would most likely be the X app.

According to a court brief published by journalist Laura Loomer, who is suing Twitter and other social media companies, Twitter has merged with X Corp.

In a second filing with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida Miami Division, Twitter's attorney Joshua Webb also provided documentation claiming that “Twitter has been merged into X Corp. and no longer exists”

Although Musk hasn't made the change official, he has kept up a public pattern with the letter X. Musk cryptically tweeted "X" early on Tuesday morning as the platform saw the change's news spread.

The impact of the Twitter and X Corp. merger on the social media ecosystem may be extensive. Musk's long-term business plan calls for the creation of an app with a variety of features that might rival current social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.
