T-Mobile US Inc. Can Acquire Mint Mobile
News Synopsis
According to persons familiar with the situation, T-Mobile US Inc. is thinking about purchasing Ryan Reynolds' budget wireless company Mint Mobile.
The persons, who asked not to be named because the talk is private, claimed that the second-largest US mobile service provider has been in contact with Mint Mobile. Closely held Mint Mobile may choose to remain independent or sell to another party; no final decisions have been taken, the sources continued.
According to one of the sources, Reynolds owns around a quarter of the business. T- Mobile declined to comment. Requests for comment from Mint Mobile representatives were not immediately answered.
According to its website, Mint Mobile offers affordable cell phone plans on the T-Mobile network starting at $15 a month. With the ability to start with a three-month term and then make adjustments after that, the company's plans are made to ensure that customers don't pay for more bandwidth than they use.
In 2019, Reynolds, the Deadpool action hero franchise's star, acquired a stake in Mint Mobile. He has acted in TV commercials for Mint Mobile and extensively promoted the company to his 21 million Twitter and 47 million Instagram followers as the company's top salesperson. Reynolds co-owned a liquor company that in 2020 sold some of its brands to Diageo Plc for $610 million.
T-Mobile got an advantage over rivals AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. in the 5G service by around a year in 2020 because of a wealth of midband frequencies it acquired with the acquisition of Sprint Corp.
