IAS Explains What Went Into Making Indore India’s First ‘Water Plus City’

Most of the sewage waste generated in India goes down the drain, and into the rivers and other water bodies. Research suggests that dysfunctional Sewage Treatment Plants and their outdated infrastructure have become one of the foremost reasons for such a high proportion of wastewater entering natural water bodies without treatment. And, Indore, is named as the cleanest city in India, because it has achieved another level to unravel sewage issues and become the first Water Plus city within the country. Indore is India's high-quality Plus City under Swachh Survekshan 2021.

It's the cleanest city in India. Swachh Survekshan is an Annual Survey of Cleanliness, Hygiene, and Sanitation in cities and towns. It was launched as a component of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Seven sewerage treatment plants were constructed within the city and about 110 million liters of water is treated every day. consistent with the Water Plus Protocol Guidelines. 147 special forms of urinals were constructed within the city. Besides, the work of cleaning ponds, wells, and every possible water body is also done.
