India has jumped 6 places in the Logistics Performance Index of the World Bank
News Synopsis
India is now ranked 38th out of 139 nations in the World Bank's Logistic Performance Index 2023, according to a government press statement.
Four out of the six LPI indicators have experienced significant gains in India as a result of different efforts that have been put in place over the past several years.
"This is a strong indicator of India's global positioning, with this development being powered by our government's laser focus on reforms for Improving Logistics Infrastructure," the commerce and industry ministry stated on April 27.
The World Bank Group created the logistics index as an Interactive Benchmarking Tool. It assists nations in identifying the opportunities and problems they have in their Performance of Trade Logistics, as well as what they can do to improve their performance.
It gauges how simple it is to create reliable supply chain relationships and the structural elements that make this feasible. The World Bank has been reporting the index, which considers six factors to judge performance every two years from 2010 to 2018 with a gap in 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and a reorganization of the index methodology, which was finally published in 2023.
Additionally, the ministry praised a number of recent government efforts.
The PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, which aims to create infrastructure in a coordinated manner by using technology, was introduced by the Indian government in October 2021, according to a release. PM GatiShakti "... addresses the emerging needs of transforming the logistics landscape due to factors like rapid urbanization, changing energy choices, e-commerce need to develop resilient supply chains, etc."
In order to create a logistics policy, states and union territories used the National Logistics Policy (NLP) as a reference. According to the government, the policy is focused on Modernizing and Digitizing Logistics Infrastructure and Services.
