Red Sox to be First US Sports Channel to Launch Streaming Service
News Synopsis
The Red Sox and Bruins teams said it will be the first US regional sports channel to launch a standalone streaming video service. Fans in England can stream the network commonly known as NESN for $29.99 per month or $329.99 per year. This app, called NESN 360, shares the same live feeds and exclusive content as TV networks.
NESN's standalone service offers another option for fans of the Red Sox in Major League Baseball and the Bruins in the National Hockey League. NESN will offer those who buy a yearly package eight free Red Sox tickets to make an annual subscription more attractive.
While major networks broadcasting national sports programs, such as NBC and CBS, are beginning to add some games to consumer streaming services, regional sports networks are working to complete their own plans.
Sinclair BroadcastGroup Inc., the largest owner of the regional sports channel, is also planning to release streaming apps in some markets in the third quarter and will have a wider rollout thereafter. The company charges $19.99 per month or $189.99 per year.
