News Synopsis

According to Ofcom, major phone networks have agreed to automatically ban practically all internet calls from abroad that claim to be from UK numbers. Every year, millions of people around the world use internet-based calling technology, commonly known as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), to make free or low-cost phone calls.

According to Gabriel Cirlig of the US cyber-security firm Human, the VoIP provider is responsible for ensuring that the calls it sends to telecoms networks are valid. The UK is also attempting to invest in technology that will boost overall telecoms’ cyber-security. In 2017, BT and the government commissioned Arqit to develop quantum encryption for satellites.

The company, which went public on the Nasdaq in June, has devised a solution that uses satellite to send "unbreakable" software encryption keys to safeguard any device or cloud server.
