News Synopsis

The Maruti Suzuki Swift, launched in 2005, quickly became an iconic vehicle in the Indian automotive market. With its distinctive design and impressive performance, the Swift has enjoyed widespread success.

Now, 19 years and four generations later, we explore whether Maruti Suzuki has retained the magic that made the Swift a household name.

Polarising Front-End Design

The 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift front-end design is somewhat polarising but grows on you over time. The tall front bumper and sinewy fender flares create a unique look, while the clamshell-like bonnet and integrated swept-back headlamps with boomerang DRLs give the car a modern and cohesive appearance.

Sporty Profile and Striking Rear

The profile of the new Swift features a prominent shoulder line that enhances its sporty and broad look. The top-spec variant boasts 15-inch alloy wheels that fill out the wheel wells nicely. Notably, the rear door handles have moved back to the body from the quarter panel.

The rear end is particularly distinctive, with LED taillamps and a shoulder line running into the boot, providing a 'thicc' appearance. The inverted 'C' LED elements in the taillights add a premium appeal, especially at night.

Upgraded Interiors

Inside, the Swift has received significant upgrades. A 9-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with an Arkamys sound system takes center stage in the cabin. The dashboard features silver inserts that contrast with the all-black theme, adding a premium touch.

The new digital MID display in the analogue pod-style instrument cluster offers a blend of retro and modern elements.

The updated steering wheel has a flat-bottom design, enhancing the sporty appeal. The cabin is thoughtfully designed with ample storage, including bottle holders in each door and cupholders in the center console.

The second row now features its own AC vents and USB charging ports, though knee room remains a bit cramped compared to the spacious front seats.

Enhanced Chassis and Performance

The 2024 Swift continues to use the HEARTECT platform but now includes ultra-high tensile steel for improved crash-worthiness and handling. The car retains a 2,450mm wheelbase but feels more stable, with tyres positioned closer to the edges.

Under the hood, the new Swift replaces the K-series 4-cylinder with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine. Despite being down 7bhp and 2Nm of torque, the Z12E engine delivers more torque at lower RPMs, enhancing city driving performance. The engine remains quiet and refined at city speeds, with a pleasant grunt when accelerating.

Transmission Options

The Swift offers a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT automatic transmission. The manual version is preferred for enthusiasts, with short, crisp throws and a light, hydraulically actuated clutch. The AMT, while efficient at 25.8km/l, has noticeable gear shifts and is better suited for urban driving.

Driving Dynamics

The suspension setup strikes a balance between comfort and handling. It handles bumps well and offers impressive cornering capabilities, thanks to firm springs and a taut chassis.

Conclusion

The 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift retains the charm and performance that made it a success in 2005. Priced at Rs 9 lakh for the ZXi+ MT and Rs 50,000 more for the AMT, it offers modern amenities, comfortable ride quality, and engaging driving dynamics. Despite a market flooded with micro-SUVs, the Swift remains a strong contender in the hatchback segment.
