News Synopsis

Zoom has officially launched its cloud-based phone service, Zoom Phone, in India, with the initial rollout taking place in Pune, within the Maharashtra Telecom Circle. This launch marks a significant milestone as it represents Zoom’s first cloud phone solution that is licensed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India.

A New Era of Communication Solutions

Zoom Phone is designed to cater to both multinational corporations and local enterprises, offering a robust and straightforward voice communication tool. The service is built with a focus on reliability, security, and flexibility, enabling seamless integration with Zoom’s existing suite of collaboration tools. It addresses the requirements of a hybrid workforce by allowing teams located in various regions to stay connected effortlessly.

Commitment to the Indian Market

“We’re thrilled to introduce Zoom Phone to India, starting with Pune,” stated Sameer Raje, General Manager and Head of India & SAARC region at Zoom. He emphasized that this launch is a crucial step in the company’s commitment to the Indian market, aiming to empower businesses of all sizes to improve employee engagement and enhance customer experiences.

Future Expansion Plans

Following the launch in Pune, Zoom has plans to expand its cloud phone service to other major telecom circles across India. The next cities set to receive the service include:

  • Bangalore (Karnataka)

  • Chennai (Tamil Nadu)

  • Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh)

  • Mumbai

  • Delhi

This strategic expansion will enable Zoom Phone to reach key technology centers throughout the country, making the service accessible to a wider audience.

Regulatory Compliance and Infrastructure Development

In April 2023, Zoom India obtained the Unified License with Access for All of India along with long-distance licenses from the DoT. Since then, the company has been diligently working to establish dedicated local infrastructure to adhere to regulatory requirements.

“Meeting India’s Unified Telecom license requirements was crucial for us,” explained Velchamy Sankarlingam, President of Product and Engineering at Zoom. He highlighted the company’s commitment to compliance, noting the construction of local interconnection infrastructure as evidence of their dedication to providing a trusted service that aligns with customer expectations.

Advanced AI Features for Enhanced Productivity

Zoom Phone distinguishes itself from other cloud phone services by incorporating a range of AI-powered features designed to improve productivity. Some of the standout features include:

  • Post-Call Summaries: After a call, users receive concise summaries and next steps, allowing them to focus on the discussion rather than on taking notes.

  • Voicemail Prioritization: The system automatically moves urgent messages to the top of the queue, ensuring that important communications are addressed promptly.

  • Voicemail Task Extraction: This feature extracts actionable tasks from voicemails, helping users identify responsibilities without the need to listen to every message.

Seamless Integration and Scalability

Zoom Phone integrates seamlessly with various leading business applications, contact center partners, and hardware providers. It is available as an add-on for existing paid Zoom customers and supports both inbound and outbound calls through the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

“The availability of Zoom Phone is timely,” remarked Krishna Baidya, Senior Industry Director at Frost & Sullivan. He noted the growing demand for unified communications solutions that incorporate telephony in India. Zoom Phone is well-positioned to meet this demand, standing out for its scalability, robust security features, and user-friendly interface.

Conclusion

The launch of Zoom Phone in India signifies a pivotal advancement in the realm of communication solutions, particularly for businesses operating in diverse environments. With its unique features and commitment to regulatory compliance, Zoom is poised to enhance the communication landscape for companies of all sizes in India. The planned expansion into major technology hubs further reinforces Zoom’s dedication to providing innovative solutions that cater to the evolving needs of the modern workforce.
