“Water water everywhere, Nor a drop to drink!”
These lines from the “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge can soon be reality. Only one percent of the total water present on earth is drinkable, and the rest is either salty or is frozen. We still do not hesitate to pollute that one percent of our factories and research plants have continuously polluted our water bodies by dumping huge amounts of toxic waste and other hazardous by-products. Water has always been a matter of concern, yet not many improvements can be seen in the condition of our water bodies. The constant hunger for power and energy may have led to the development but has constantly declined the health of our environment. We have harmed our water bodies to such an extent that the damage cannot be reversed overnight, and constant efforts are required to improve the conditions of our water bodies. Hence every year, World Water Day is celebrated to remind people of their duties and make everyone aware of the dangers of the ill-treatment of that one percent water.
History of World Water Day
This day was first proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. In December 1992, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/47/193, by which 22 March of each year was declared World Day for Water. In 1993, the world celebrated its first World water day, and ever since, the world water has been celebrated on 22 March every year.
Why do we celebrate world water day?
The prime focus of world water day is to raise awareness among the 2.2 Billion people who are living without the asses to save water. World water day majorly covers the topics that revolve around freshwater. Every year world water day focuses on a theme. In 2021, world water day was celebrated on the theme, “Valuing Water.” Explaining the theme, the UN said on its water day website, “The value of water is about much more than its price – water has enormous and complex value for our households, food, culture, health, education, economics and the integrity of our natural environment. If we overlook any of these values, we risk mismanaging this finite, irreplaceable resource.”
World Water Day theme 2022
This year, the theme of world water day is “Groundwater- Making the invisible visible.” This theme states groundwater is not visible, but it affects our environment majorly as groundwater is the largest source of fresh drinking water and also the major source of nutrition to the trees and plants. This year's theme will focus on discussing the points that will affect the health of the groundwater and how we can utilize our resources to preserve groundwater. The website worldwaterday.org quotes, “Groundwater is invisible, but its impact is visible everywhere. Out of sight, under our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives. Almost all of the liquid freshwater in the world is groundwater. As climate change gets worse, groundwater will become more and more critical. We need to work together to sustainably manage this precious resource. Groundwater may be out of sight, but it must not be out of mind.” Almost 50% of the population of the world relies on Groundwater for consumption purposes. In rural areas, almost 99% of irrigation is accomplished from groundwater. Groundwater makes up 99% of the water available for drinking. The depletion of groundwater will ultimately affect the vegetation, and almost 90% of fertile land will go unproductive.
