News Synopsis

Volvo is set to take the next big step in its electrification journey with the official unveiling of the Volvo ES90 on March 5, 2025. This upcoming flagship electric sedan is poised to replace the current Volvo S90, marking a major transition for the brand. The ES90 will be the first electric sedan and the sixth all-electric model in Volvo’s global lineup.

Adding to the excitement, Volvo will introduce the new XC90 in India on March 4, 2025, a day before the ES90's global debut. With a strong commitment to achieving a fully battery-electric lineup by 2030, Volvo is rapidly expanding its portfolio of EVs. Ahead of its official reveal, the Swedish automaker has already teased the ES90’s silhouette on social media and its website, sparking anticipation among electric vehicle enthusiasts.

Volvo ES90: A Software-Driven Electric Sedan

The Volvo ES90 will be the second model after the EX90 to be based on the Scalable Product Architecture 2 (SPA2) platform. This advanced platform is designed to support future-ready electric vehicles with an integrated hardware-software framework.

From the teaser images, the ES90 is expected to retain a similar design language to the fossil-fuel-powered S90, with sleek lines and a luxurious, futuristic appeal. Staying true to Volvo’s signature aesthetic, the ES90 will sport the brand’s Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lights (DRLs), ensuring a distinctive and premium look.

Volvo is taking a software-first approach, integrating a high-performance computing system powered by Nvidia chips. The ES90 will be Volvo’s first EV to feature a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin setup, surpassing the EX90’s single Orin chip + Nvidia Drive AGX Xavier processor. This innovation will enable advanced driver-assistance features, seamless over-the-air (OTA) updates, and AI-powered performance enhancements.

For EX90 owners, Volvo has confirmed that they will also have access to free software upgrades, ensuring that all existing customers benefit from the latest advancements.

Volvo ES90: Advanced Safety Features

Safety has always been at the core of Volvo’s philosophy, and the ES90 will continue this tradition with the brand’s latest Safe Space Technology suite. This advanced safety system includes:

  • 12 ultrasonic sensors

  • 8 cameras

  • 5 radar units

  • 1 LiDAR sensor

Additionally, the ES90 will introduce a cutting-edge "Advanced Driver Understanding System", which enhances driver assistance and semi-autonomous driving capabilities. This system works seamlessly with the LiDAR-based safety suite, ensuring maximum collision prevention, pedestrian detection, and adaptive driving.

With these safety advancements, the ES90 aims to be one of the safest EVs in the luxury sedan segment.

Volvo ES90: Battery, Powertrain & Performance

Under the hood, the ES90 will share the same powertrain as the EX90. It will feature a powerful 111 kWh battery pack, providing an estimated driving range of 600+ km under Chinese testing standards.

The ES90 is expected to come in two drivetrain options:

  1. Single-Motor Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD)

  2. Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD)

This powertrain setup ensures exceptional efficiency, making the ES90 an ideal choice for long-distance EV driving. Volvo’s commitment to high-performance, sustainable mobility continues with this luxury electric sedan.

Volvo ES90: Will It Launch in India?

After its official debut, the ES90 will first be launched in China, followed by other international markets later in 2025.

For India, Volvo has ambitious electrification plans, aiming to introduce one EV per year. However, given the Indian market's strong preference for SUVs, Volvo is likely to prioritize the EX90 and EX60 SUVs before bringing the ES90 sedan.

As a result, Indian consumers may have to wait at least two years before the ES90 is introduced in India, likely by 2027.

Volvo’s expansion into luxury electric sedans showcases its long-term commitment to sustainable mobility, bringing advanced EV technology to a global audience.
