Sundar Pichai used to sleep in a living room of a cramped family home with his brother when they were kids. His father, who was an electrical engineer at the British multinational GEC, made sure that his sons received the education that could make their life. Pichai showed an early interest in tech and an exceptional memory, particularly for phone numbers. He received a scholarship to Stanford University after graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur with a degree in metallurgy (B.Tech., 1993) and was awarded a silver medal (M.S. in engineering and materials science, 1995). He stayed in the United States after that, briefly working for Applied Materials (a semiconductor materials supplier) before earning an M.B.A. (2002) from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

Pichai decided to join Google in 2004 as the product management and development head after a brief stint at the management consultancy McKinsey & Co. He first started working on the Google Toolbar, which allowed users of Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer to quickly access the Google search engine. Over the next few years, he worked directly on Google's own web browser, Chrome, which was released publicly in 2008. Pichai was designated as vice president of product development the same year, and he began to take a more active public role.
