On November 19, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket successfully launched the GSAT-20 communication satellite, developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), from Florida’s Cape Canaveral. This event marks a significant milestone in commercial collaboration between ISRO and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, opening the doors for future partnerships.
The GSAT-20, also referred to as GSAT N-2, weighs 4,700 kg, making it too heavy for India’s existing rockets to carry. This limitation led ISRO to partner with SpaceX, whose Falcon 9 rocket offered the ideal solution. The satellite, designed to operate for 14 years, will deliver essential services across India, including internet connectivity to remote and underserved regions.
For the first time, ISRO has developed a satellite that exclusively utilizes the advanced Ka-band frequency. This frequency range, spanning 27 to 40 gigahertz (GHz), enables higher bandwidth, making GSAT-20 a technological leap forward in satellite communication. Its adoption promises enhanced internet speeds and improved connectivity for various applications.
The GSAT-N2 is set to revolutionize broadband services in India, extending its reach to remote areas where traditional internet infrastructure is lacking. Additionally, the satellite will enhance in-flight connectivity, allowing passengers on Indian airlines to access high-speed internet during travel. These advancements are expected to significantly boost India’s digital infrastructure and bridge connectivity gaps.
The GSAT-20 satellite launch is estimated to cost between $60 and $70 million. NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of ISRO operating under the Department of Space, is reported to have paid nearly ₹500 crore for the mission. This investment highlights the strategic importance of the satellite in advancing India’s communication capabilities.
This launch signifies the first of many potential partnerships between ISRO and SpaceX. With SpaceX’s proven expertise in launching heavy satellites and ISRO’s growing portfolio of advanced satellite technology, such collaborations are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping India’s space ambitions.
