The State Food Safety Index or SFSI rating is created for the three categories of big states, small states, and Union Territories in an effort to assess food safety standards across the country.
In this year's State Food Safety Index issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India under the Union Health Ministry, Manipur came in third place among India's small states following only Goa and Meghalaya.
Gujarat scored the highest score out of the big states getting 72 followed by Tamil Nadu and Kerala in that order.
The report for 2020–21 was released on Monday by Mansukh Mandaviya, minister of health for the Union. The SFSI rating is an attempt to assess national food safety standards. To ensure comparability between entities that are related the SFSI Index is developed for three categories, including major states, small states, and union territories, according to FSSAI.
Based on the rankings for 2020–21, the minister acknowledged nine top states and Union Territories. The factors on which state performances are assessed for the ranking include human resources and institutional data, compliance, food testing infrastructure and surveillance, training and capacity building, and Consumer Empowerment.
The minister also confirmed the withdrawal of 19 mobile food testing vans to support the national food safety ecosystem. The government stated that there are currently 109 such mobile testing vans in service.
