News Synopsis

On Sunday, Deliveroo, following a sudden strike by the foreign delivery workers in the United Arab Emirates over working conditions interrupted services, decided to suspend plans that would cut rider earnings in the United Arab Emirates. According to Reuters, in an email sent to restaurants on Monday, the company told it was pausing a proposed change in rider fee structure and that it would interact with riders over the weeks and months ahead. A day before, the company informed restaurants that "riders are striking and refusing to attend their shifts or deliver orders" and in an email told that it would "protect Deliveroo rider earnings to remain the most competitive in the market".

A spokesperson of Deliveroo confirmed to Reuters that the company was stopping all changes and that it would work with delivery riders to come up with a structure that suits everyone and has their "best interest at heart". On Sunday, multiple social media posts showed large groups of delivery drivers wearing Deliveroo uniforms striking in Dubai against pay cuts and extended working hours. Some posts said earnings were being cut by about 15% to 8.75 dirhams ($2.38) an hour, while shifts were extended to 12 hours.
