News Synopsis

MG Motor India has introduced the Windsor EV, marking its entry as the third fully-electric vehicle from the brand in the Indian market. With an introductory price set at ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the Windsor EV offers a compelling option for eco-conscious consumers. However, this price does not cover the entire cost of ownership, as the battery is leased separately by the company, adding a significant element to the overall pricing structure.

Battery Leasing Model: The Key Catch

The MG Windsor EV's starting price of ₹9.99 lakh is notable, but there is a crucial caveat to consider. The vehicle's battery will be leased to buyers at a rate of ₹3.5 per kilometer. This battery-as-a-service (BaaS) model allows MG Motor to keep the initial purchase price lower while generating ongoing revenue through the battery lease. This innovative approach may appeal to some buyers but could influence the total cost of ownership significantly.

Booking and Test Drive Information

Bookings for the MG Windsor EV are scheduled to open on October 3, 2024. Prospective buyers interested in experiencing the vehicle firsthand will be able to start test drives from October 13, 2024. MG Motor has yet to disclose the full price list for the Windsor EV or the exact timeline for delivery commencement. The Windsor EV will be available in three distinct trims: Excite, Exclusive, and Essence, offering a range of features to suit various preferences.

Exterior Design: A Sleek and Modern Look

The MG Windsor EV showcases a design that mirrors its Chinese counterpart, the Wuling Cloud EV. The exterior features a sleek split headlight setup, complemented by connected LED daytime running lights (DRLs) that enhance its modern appearance. The minimalistic side profile is accentuated by flush door handles and 18-inch alloy wheels, contributing to a streamlined and sophisticated look.

The charging flap is discreetly integrated below the A-pillar, providing easy access without disrupting the vehicle's clean lines. At the rear, a sporty roof spoiler and connected LED tail lamps emphasize the Windsor EV's futuristic design. Additional aesthetic touches include blacked-out pillars, expansive quarter glass, and a panoramic glass roof. Buyers can choose from four color options: Starburst Black, Pearl White, Clay Beige, and Turquoise Green.

Interior Features: High-Tech and Luxurious

Inside, the MG Windsor EV is equipped with a 15.6-inch infotainment system, the largest in its class, ensuring seamless connectivity with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and integrated apps like JioSaavn. The 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster adds to the advanced driving experience.

The Windsor EV prioritizes passenger comfort with a luxurious backseat that reclines up to 135 degrees. Front seats are electrically adjustable, and rear AC vents enhance overall convenience. Noteworthy interior features include a first-of-its-kind glass roof in the mass-market segment, a 6-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 256 multi-color ambient cabin lights.

Additional features include wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 9-speaker Infinity sound system, wireless phone charging, and a powered tailgate. These elements collectively contribute to a premium driving experience.

Powertrain Specifications: Efficient and Versatile

The MG Windsor EV is powered by a 38kWh LFP battery with prismatic cells. This battery supplies energy to a single electric motor mounted on the front axle, producing 134 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. The vehicle offers an estimated range of 331 km on a single charge, according to ARAI standards. Drivers can select from four drive modes: Eco, Eco+, Normal, and Sport, allowing for a customizable driving experience.

Charging Options: Flexibility and Convenience

MG Motor provides several charging options for the Windsor EV. A 3.3 kW CCS2 connection takes approximately 13.8 hours to fully recharge the battery. Faster charging options include a 7.4 kW connection, which requires 6.5 hours, and a 50 kW charger that takes just 55 minutes. Additionally, the Windsor EV supports up to a 45 kW DC fast charger, offering further flexibility. The battery leasing model means that customers will incur costs based on their usage, adding a unique dimension to the vehicle’s overall cost structure.

Conclusion: Evaluating the MG Windsor EV

The MG Windsor EV represents a significant addition to MG Motor's electric vehicle lineup in India. With its introductory price of ₹9.99 lakh and innovative battery leasing model, it offers an attractive option for those looking to invest in an electric vehicle. The sleek design, advanced features, and various trim options make it a compelling choice. However, potential buyers should carefully consider the ongoing costs associated with the battery lease to fully assess the total cost of ownership. The Windsor EV’s blend of style, technology, and performance is poised to make a notable impact in the electric vehicle market.
