News Synopsis

Shillong will become home to India's first Center of Excellence for Online Gaming, according to Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

By March 2023, Digital India Startup Hub will establish India's first Center of Excellence in Online Gaming in Shillong through the Software Technology Parks of India.

The Next Gen Online Gaming ecosystem is expected to be built by startups and entrepreneurs with the help of the Centre of Excellence in Shillong, Meghalaya.

In an interview with journalists on Friday in Shillong, Chandrasekhar was quoted as saying, "It is the vision of PM Shri Narendra Modi ji that the next wave of startups and entrepreneurs must come from Shillong, Kohima and other parts of the Northeast"

In view of the continued global expansion in the digitalization of goods, services, and devices, the minister again emphasized the need for digital skills post-Covid.

Online gaming-related Draft modifications to the IT Rules 2021 have recently been made available for public consultation by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY).

The ministry also published draft revisions to the IT intermediary rules for 2021 that address online gaming for the comment period. The draft has been developed to ensure that online game customers are safeguarded from any harm and that game offering comply with Indian regulatory obligations.

The draft proposed a self-regulatory structure that, in the future, might also monitor online game material and make sure that the games don't feature violent, addictive, or sexual content.

The age gating is now set at 18, and the government would like to keep it that way while evaluating the effectiveness of the current framework for fostering innovation in the online gaming industry while maintaining user safety and trust.

The minister has previously stated that due to safety concerns, between 40 and 45 percent of Indian gamers are women, making it even more crucial to maintain the gaming ecosystem.
